Room in the Inn
By Elma Helgason
Yes, they left Him outside - that we never would do;
And the tear of compassion soon starts.
Have we room in the inn? Did we turn him down too?
When He knocked at the door of our hearts?
Of course, we tell ourselves, we would never have turned the Holy Family away. Even if we didn't know that we were looking upon Mary, Joseph and the infant God when we opened the door at that moment, we would surely have found compassion in our hearts to do something for a pregnant woman and her displaced family, who were merely following the orders of Rome, right? Let's pray that our righteousness really does extend into true nobility and compassion, like the watchful, diligent Noble Nutcracker above. Instead of responding in the heat of the moment, let's pray for the discipline to treat people they way we would want to be treated, most especially in those times when it is difficult and highly inconvenient.
